Learning New Information During Sleep

Information picked up while we slumber can stay with us when we awake, even if we aren’t aware of it.
Scientists have found the strongest evidence yet that people can learn new information while they are sleeping, rather than simply strengthening memories already made.
Anat Arzi from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel played tones to sleeping volunteers before wafting smells of deodorant, shampoo, rotten fish, or dead animals past their noses. The smells triggered a sniffing reflex and the pleasant ones drew stronger sniffs. Then, when Arzi played the tones alone, the volunteers still sniffed, and more strongly to tones that had been paired with nice odors.
This conditioned response lasted through the night and into the next morning when the volunteers woke up. Although they still sniffed when they heard the tones, none of them were aware of what they had learned.
“This work is transformative in that it shows that humans can acquire information not only without awareness but also in a non-conscious state,” says Kimberly Fenn, a psychologist from Michigan State University, who was not involved in the study.
“There’s a kind of dogma that says the brain encodes new information when it’s awake, and consolidates memory while asleep,” explained Jan Born, a sleep researcher from the University of Lübeck. “This paper shows that the contrast between these two modes of activity isn’t that sharp.”
Decades of research has already shown that the brain actively processes information while we sleep, and we can strengthen existing information with the right triggers, such as odors present at the time of initial learning. But its ability to learn while snoozing has been less clear.
Several groups have tested for advanced forms of learning during sleep, like picking up the links between pairs of words. All such experiments have failed. The only positive results came from studies showing that a very basic form of learning known as classical conditioning can occur in sleeping rats and infants, which begin to associate two stimuli—say, a tone and a puff of air—if they are presented together.
By contrast, Arzi’s experiments used a different technique called “trace conditioning,” where the tone and the smells are separated by more than a second. “This is considered a more advanced type of learning, and unlike classical conditioning, it depends on the hippocampus,” she said. “This is the type of learning associated with more complicated cognitive tasks, and therefore finding it in sleep is potentially important and novel.”
Arzi also took steps to ensure that her subjects were not inadvertently waking up. Throughout her study, a sleep technician monitored the volunteers’ brain activity and halted the experiment whenever they showed signs of rousing. All such trials were left out of the final analysis.
Arzi’s volunteers only learned a very simple response, and it is not clear if we can pick up more complex information while sleeping. “This does not imply that you can place your homework under the pillow and know it in the morning,” she said. “There will be clear limits on what we can learn in sleep, but I speculate that they will be beyond what we have demonstrated.”
Fenn agreed. “It is difficult to imagine that any form of declarative information, even simple vocabulary learning, could be accomplished in a sleep state,” she said. “That being said, this study may have strong implications for conditioning of undesirable behaviours.”
Addictions, for example, are sometimes treated by teaching people to associate the drugs they crave with something repulsive. Although such approaches are controversial, our hours of slumber could provide a prime opportunity to enshrine such associations, and the lack of awareness when we wake up would only be a bonus, Arzi noted. “If you have some bad habit that you want to get rid of, awareness may only hinder your efforts,” she said. “If you could learn to get rid of the habit during sleep, you may do it without awareness as to why.”

Lowering Carbon with Algae

Spawning algal blooms by fertilizing the Southern Ocean with iron could help sink atmospheric carbon to the deep ocean—and maybe slow the course of climate change.

Great blooms of oceanic algae, called phytoplankton, take carbon out of the atmosphere during photosynthesis, much of which is then taken deep into the ocean with them when they die. Scientists have theorized that this mechanism helped cool the earth during historic ice ages by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it at the ocean floor, where it cannot be recycled back into the atmosphere. Inducing algal blooms on a large scale could do the same today, Picture:An algal bloom in the Arabian Sea
NASA reducing the impact of carbon dioxide on the greenhouse effect and slowing the impact of global climate change.
Indeed, as reported today (July 18) in Nature, scientists have seeded the ocean with iron and watched as the resulting bloom flourished, then died, sinking down to the deep ocean with a significant amount of carbon in tow.
“[The authors] were focused and quite successful at seeing if you added iron, what would be the biological response of the phytoplankton? What was the fate of the carbon and nutrients they sucked up?” said marine geochemist Ken Buesseler of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, who was not involved in the study. “This is probably the best example of a group that stayed out long enough and looked deep enough to see if there were any effects below the surface.”
During glacial periods, more dust rich in iron, an essential nutrient for algae, reaches the oceans. Iron is particularly limiting in the Southern Ocean, and previous studies have shown that adding iron to the surface waters does induce large blooms of algae. In 2004, Victor Smetacek of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Germany, and his colleagues decided to repeat these experiments and closely monitor what happened. They seeded a portion of the Southern Ocean and followed the progress of the resultant algal bloom for 37 days. The team took regular profiles of the nutrients and biomass down through a column of water to the sea floor, several thousand meters deep. From their data, they were able to see good correlation between what the algae were using up at the surface, and what was showing up again in the deep, as the phytoplankton died and sank.
The team chose to spread the iron over an eddy, an isolated spinning column of water, so they could minimize the exchange of water and nutrients with the open ocean, effectively using the eddy as a natural beaker. They were able to estimate that about half of the bloom biomass sank to depths of 1,000 meters or more, well below the upper mixed layer (the first 100 meters or so in this region) that allows open exchange with the atmosphere. Carbon sunk in this way can stay stored for centuries, until deep, slow ocean currents eventually bring it back to the surface.
Smetacek says that while longer experiments are still needed, as are samples from the sea floor sediment itself, rather than just deep water, to confirm what settles into the mud, preliminary estimations suggest that as much as one gigaton of carbon could be removed from the atmosphere in this way each year—a quarter of the carbon that is currently accumulating in the atmosphere as a result of human activities on an annual basis. Thus, iron fertilization could serve as an effective geoengineering strategy to help slow the harmful effects, such as climate change, that come with rising atmospheric carbon. However, both Smetacek and Buesseler warn of the potential drawbacks of large-scale fertilization.
“If you do this for a longer time scale, you could change the structure of the ecosystem,” said Smetacek. By increasing the phytoplankton population, the number of microscopic animals that feed on it could also explode, rapidly using up all the nutrients at the surface and creating “dead zones” where nothing can thrive, he explained. In addition, some algal blooms release harmful gases and toxins which could damage surrounding marine ecosystems.  No such consequences occurred in the present experiment, Smetacek said, but drawbacks of larger experiments “should be monitored by an independent group of scientists that are working in a non-profit manner.”
The ocean’s ability to sink carbon also depends on the many changes we are already making to the marine environment, including rising ocean temperatures and the decline of whale and krill populations in the Southern Ocean, which have previously played a large part in the cycling of nutrients harnessed by algal blooms. This experiment and its predecessors play important roles in understanding how the ocean, which naturally sinks about a third of our carbon emissions, plays in the global carbon cycle.
“The experiments themselves are not  of huge environmental consequence, [but] we can learn a lot from them,” said Buesseler. “This was a successful way to study the ocean and climate.”

“Almanya, ABD, Arnavutluk, Avustralya, Avusturya, Belarus, Belçika, Belize, Birleşik Krallık, Bosna Hersek, Brezilya (Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondonia, Acre, Para, Espirito Santo, Minas Eyaletleri), Brunei, Çek Cumhuriyeti, Danimarka, Dominik Cumhuriyeti, El Salvador, Endonezya, Estonya, Finlandiya, Fransa, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Hırvatistan, Hollanda, Honduras, İrlanda, İspanya, İsveç, İsviçre, İtalya, İzlanda, Japonya, KKTC, Kanada,Karadağ, Kolombiya (Choco Bölümünün Northwest Bölgesi, Archipelago de San Andres ve Providencia), Kosta Rika, Küba, Lesoto , Letonya, Litvanya, Lüksemburg, Macaristan, Madagaskar, Makedonya, Malta, Mauritius, Meksika, Nikaragua, Norveç, Panama, Polonya, Portekiz, Romanya, San Marino, Sırbistan, Singapur, Slovakya, Slovenya, Şili, Ukrayna, Uruguay, Vanuatu, Yeni Kaledonya, Yeni Zelanda, Yunanistan.”

The Scrap and Rework Reduction Road Map

In most organizations, when a manufacturer produces a product it is inspected at various stages during the production cycle. In some cases, the product is found to be nonconforming. Nonconforming means the product does not meet its drawing or specification requirements. When this occurs, the organization needs to decide what to do with the nonconforming item. The manufacturer can:

  • Use it “as is” in the nonconforming condition if the product is deemed acceptable for use in its nonconforming condition and it is acceptable to the customer.
  • Rework the nonconforming material such that it meets the drawing requirements. Repair the nonconforming material in a manner that doesn’t exactly meet the drawing requirements, but the repair makes it suitable for use (again, if this is suitable to the customer).
  • Scrap the nonconforming item if it cannot be reworked or repaired economically.

The cost of these activities is high. Most people are surprised when they learn how high the costs of poor quality are. Informed estimates consistently place the cost of poor quality between 20 and 50 percent of the total cost of goods sold. That is a huge number, and it represents a huge opportunity. If the organization can reduce the amount of nonconforming material it produces, the cost of reworking, repairing, remaking, and administering nonconforming material will lower costs significantly.

Recommended scrap and rework reduction approach.

Turkey Becomes Main Supplier of Steel to Iran

Turkey's importance as a trade conduit to Iran has widened to include supplying most of its steel as Turkish banks are among the very few still willing to arrange financing for the sanctions-hit country.
REUTERS 16 August 2012

LONDON- Despite sometimes strained political ties, trade between the two neighbours has risen sharply over the past decade, with Turkey regarded by some as a possible weak link in international sanctions imposed on Iran over Tehran's suspected development of nuclear weapons.

Iran is Turkey's biggest export market for gold while Turkey is Europe's only remaining importer of Iranian oil.

Now traders say steel bound for Iran is on the rise, after plunging earlier this year as toughened U.S.-led sanctions left Iranian buyers without access to major currencies.

"Turkish mills, mainly from the Iskenderun region, have sold quite a lot and they have sold at a very good price level because of the massive, massive shortage in Iran, and because Iran can't pay for it any other way," a Turkish trader said.
Turkey's exports of steel for construction to Iran rose to 15,500 tonnes in May worth roughly $10 million versus just 4,300 tonnes in March, the latest data from the International Steel
Statistics Bureau (ISSB) show.
Traders said the exports to Iran have continued to rise and have increased significantly in the past few weeks.
The higher trade between the two nations has come despite sometimes strained political relations, including after Tehran lent its support to Syrian President Bashar al Assad, while NATO member Turkey has sided with those backing the popular revolt.
Iran, with little production of its own, is one of the world's top importers of billet and rebar, used to reinforce concrete for construction.
Turkey has helped soothe Iran's heavy shortage of steel, handed a huge competitive advantage to its own makers versus producers in Russia, Ukraine and elsewhere, while boosting prices in the region to buck a negative trend in the sector globally.
Prices for Turkish steel billet have risen by about $25 to $575 per tonne on a free-on-board basis in the last two to three weeks, traders said.

Banks in traditional steel suppliers such as Turkey, Russia, Ukraine and Europe have withdrawn most financing facilities for deals with Iran, making it extremely difficult for producers and traders to do business with the Gulf country.
Yet traders said Turkey's banks, among them state-owned Halkbank, are accepting letters of credit from Iranian buyers.
"There is a facility in place which allows Turkish bank Halkbank, to receive funds from Iran, but only for material that is supplied from Turkey," said one UK-based steel trader. "Consequently Turkey almost has a monopoly."
Halkbank general manager Suleyman Aslan, declined to comment on the issue.
The Turkish trader added that while Halkbank was accepting letters of credit from Iran, it was charging high fees to do so.
In addition to Turkish steel, Turkey's exports to Iran include the resale of steel billet bought from Russia and Ukraine. This has been lucrative, especially for players in the Iskenderun  region near the border with Iraq and Iran, which have been selling high volumes of billet at good prices to both of these countries, traders said.
"Turkey can buy cheap billet and sell it at higher prices to Iran because Turkish banks accepts Iranian letters of credit but that's not possible for Russia and Ukraine," said a Russian trader.
"That's why Turkey is making business right now alone. We have got a good price for Iran but we cannot sell directly; it's difficult. Russia's trade with Iran is not as good as you think, it's very complicated now."
Trade data from ISSB supports the traders' view, showing direct steel exports from Russia and Ukraine to Iran, which were at almost 60,000 tonnes a month last October, have fallen to
zero more recently.
European steel sales to Iran were also near zero as even the few banks who had until recently helped with some financing have now tightened their policy, wary of retaliation that would
negatively affect their business elsewhere.
"Forget about that! You can't finance through a European bank anymore," said the UK-based trader.
